"Too little attention is generally given to the preservation of health. It is far better to prevent disease than to know how to treat it when contracted. It is the duty of every person, for his own sake, and for the sake of humanity, to inform himself in regard to the laws of life, and conscientiously to obey them. All need to become acquainted with that most wonderful of all organisms, the human body. They should understand the functions of the various organs and the dependence of one upon another for the dependence of one upon another for the healthy action of all. They should study the influence of the mind upon the body, and of the body upon the mind, and the laws by which they are governed." E.G.White MH 90
We must come to realize the great need for preventive health care programs, accepting responsibility for our health and modifying our lifestyles to minimize disease.
Six out of ten leading causes of death in the United States have been linked to our diet. In the 1900’s almost 40% of our caloric intake came from fruit, vegetables, and grains. Today a little more than 20% of calories come from these sources.
“Each year the average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar and 566 cans of soft drinks” (Soft Drink “Pouring Rights”: Marketing Empty Calories, Marion Nestle, PhD, MPH).
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 52 teaspoonfuls of added sugar is recorded to be consumed per person per day. (Agriculture Fact Book 2001-2002).
Junk food consumption has increased drastically in the last few decades. When comparing 1981 to 2001 the average American consumed in one year: 45 large bags of potato chips – which is up 78%; 120 orders of French fries – which is up by 130%; 190 candy bars – which is up 80%; 120 pastries or desserts – up 95%; and 150 slices of pizza – up 143% (Food for Thought, Dr. Robert Osgoodby).
If you want to rent a movie, watch ‘Super Size Me’. It documents physical and psychological changes that take place when one consumes too much junk food. Morgan Spurlock started eating at McDonald’s three meals a day for 30 days. Over the 30 day period, Spurlock had a toxic liver, his cholesterol went up from 165 to 230, he suffered from headaches and depression. (New York Post: Arch Enemy, Jan.22, 2004).
